Led by Ghanaian musician, composer and kora player Appiah Annan, Asanti Beats is a Melbourne- based Afro-fusion ensemble that brings together the rich musical traditions of West Africa with contemporary influences from Highlife, jazz, soul and funk.
At the heart of the band's sound is the kora, a 21-string harp deeply rooted in the Mande cultures of West Africa and central to the musical traditions of Mali, Guinea, Senegal and The Gambia.
Renowned for its rich melodic and storytelling qualities, the kora forms the foundation of Appiah's distinctive musical voice.
Drawing on his Ghanaian heritage, Appiah reimagines the traditional sounds of the kora through the vibrant rhythms and melodies of Highlife – Ghana's iconic music genre celebrated for its infectious grooves, syncopated guitar lines and uplifting energy. Supported by dynamic percussion, vocals and an exceptional ensemble of musicians, Asanti Beats creates a unique musical experience that honours tradition while embracing innovation.
The result is a rich and contemporary sound that moves effortlessly between soulful melodies, intricate rhythms and irresistible dance grooves.
