Appiah Annan is a Ghanaian-born artist, musician, composer, dancer, choreographer and cultural leader whose work bridges the rich traditions of West Africa with contemporary artistic expression.

As the Founder and Artistic Director of Asanti Dance Theatre in both Ghana and Australia, Appiah has spent more than two decades creating powerful artistic experiences that celebrate culture, storytelling and human connection. Through performance, choreography, education and community engagement, he has become one of Australia’s leading African performing artists and cultural ambassadors.

From Ghana to the World Stage

Born and raised in Ghana, Appiah’s artistic journey began through traditional African dance and drumming before expanding into hip hop, freestyle movement, contemporary dance and acrobatics.

At just sixteen years of age, he became the youngest dancer to win Ghana’s Upper East Regional Dance Championship, launching a professional career that would take him across Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia.

He later trained and performed with leading cultural organisations including the Ghana Dance Ensemble, the Centre for National Culture and Agoro Dance Theatre, developing a deep understanding of both traditional and contemporary African performance practices.

Founder of Asanti Dance Theatre

In 2003, Appiah founded Asanti Dance Theatre in Ghana with a vision to create opportunities for emerging artists while preserving and celebrating the cultural traditions of West Africa.

What began as a small collective of artists training and performing together on the beaches of Ghana evolved into an internationally recognised drum and dance company dedicated to performance, education and cultural exchange.

Following his move to Australia in 2007, Appiah established Asanti Dance Theatre Australia, creating new opportunities for collaboration, artistic development and intercultural dialogue through the performing arts.

Today, the company delivers performances, workshops and cultural programs throughout Australia while maintaining strong creative and community connections with Ghana.

Choreographer & Contemporary Dance Maker

Alongside his work as a performer and cultural educator, Appiah has developed a distinctive choreographic practice that combines traditional African movement traditions with contemporary dance, theatre and live music.

Drawing on influences ranging from traditional Ghanaian dance to the work of choreographers such as Pina Bausch, Alvin Ailey, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Akram Khan and Qudus Onikeku, Appiah has spent more than a decade developing an original Afro-contemporary movement language.

His choreographic works explore themes of identity, migration, memory, spirituality, belonging and cultural inheritance while creating space for African stories within contemporary performance practice.

Selected Works

Musician & Kora Player

Alongside his work as a dancer and choreographer, Appiah is an accomplished musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist with a particular passion for the kora, the 21-string harp of West Africa.

Having studied with master musicians from Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Faso, he has developed a distinctive musical voice that blends Mandeng musical traditions with the vibrant rhythms and melodies of Ghanaian Highlife.

His music spans traditional performance, contemporary composition and collaborative works, creating connections between African musical heritage and contemporary global influences.

Asanti Beats

As a musician, composer and kora player, Appiah continues to explore the evolving sounds of Africa through Asanti Beats, his contemporary Afro-fusion ensemble that blends West African musical traditions with the vibrant rhythms of Ghanaian Highlife, jazz, soul and funk.

From festivals and theatres to community celebrations and corporate events, Asanti Beats creates uplifting musical experiences that celebrate both tradition and innovation.
